GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia and China marked 65 years of diplomatic relations on Tuesday, with Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre highlighting Beijing’s continued political and development support, including new assistance for drought-affected communities.

Speaking at a ceremony in Mogadishu, Barre said the long-standing relationship, established in 1960, has been anchored in mutual respect for sovereignty and practical cooperation, noting China’s consistent backing of Somalia through shifting regional and global dynamics.

He welcomed China’s recent pledge of $1 million in aid to support Somalis hit by drought, describing the assistance as timely and reflective of a partnership that delivers tangible benefits to the country’s recovery and humanitarian response.

The anniversary underscored the depth of bilateral ties and China’s role as a key development partner at a time when Somalia is seeking greater investment, humanitarian support, and international engagement.

The event was attended by cabinet ministers, diplomats, and guests, reaffirming a relationship that Somali authorities say will continue to play a role in the country’s reconstruction and long-term development.
