GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Turkey has completed the design phase of its next-generation Turksat 7A communications satellite, with reports suggesting Somalia could become the launch site for the project, a move that could mark a major technological milestone for the nation.

Turkish media outlet Turkish Century reported that production of the satellite is expected to begin later this year as Ankara pushes to expand its space and communications capabilities through advanced satellite technology.

The reports also indicated that Turksat 7A could become the first satellite of its kind to be launched from Somalia, triggering growing discussion over Somalia’s potential future role in the space and technology sector.

If implemented, the project would represent a significant shift for Somalia, positioning the country as a possible emerging location for strategic aerospace and satellite-related activities in East Africa.

For Somalia, hosting a satellite launch could strengthen its international profile, attract technology investment and open new opportunities in telecommunications, digital infrastructure and scientific cooperation.

The development would also deepen Somalia’s growing strategic partnership with Turkey, which has become one of Mogadishu’s closest allies through investments in infrastructure, security, education and maritime cooperation.

Turkey has significantly expanded its presence in Somalia over the past decade, operating its largest overseas military training facility in Mogadishu and supporting major development projects including roads, hospitals and port infrastructure.

Analysts say Somalia’s geographic position along the Indian Ocean and near the equator could make it strategically attractive for certain aerospace and satellite operations, although no official timeline or launch agreement has yet been publicly confirmed.

The reports come as Somalia increasingly seeks to position itself as a destination for foreign investment and technology partnerships as part of broader economic modernization and state-building efforts.
