GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal Government of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has congratulated Somalis and Muslims worldwide on the start of the holy month of Ramadan, urging citizens to show solidarity with families hit by prolonged drought across the country.

In a message marking the beginning of the fasting month, the president called for collective support to assist vulnerable communities grappling with water shortages and livestock losses in several regions.

He also paid tribute to the Somali National Armed Forces, commending their “round-the-clock” operations to safeguard civilians and reclaim territory from militant groups despite difficult conditions.

The president said security gains made in recent months should be protected and strengthened during the holy month.

President Mohamud appealed for unity and social cohesion, urging the public to place national security and stability at the forefront during Ramadan.

Separately, Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs Mukhtar Robow confirmed that Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, marks the first day of Ramadan 1447 AH in Somalia following verified sightings of the crescent moon in multiple regions.

“We have made careful and extensive observations to sight the crescent of Ramadan, and the Somali government confirms that the new month has been sighted in many parts of the country,” Robow said.

The announcement signals the start of a month of fasting, prayer and reflection for Muslims across Somalia, as religious leaders call on communities to observe the month in accordance with Islamic teachings while extending charity to those in need.
