Somalia Defends Cancellation of UAE Defence Pact
GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Information Minister Daud Aweys Jama, has defended the Federal Government’s decision to cancel defense and security agreements with the United Arab Emirates, describing it as a lawful step meant to protect Somalia’s dignity, public safety, and territorial integrity.
Speaking at the weekly National Media Forum in Mogadishu, Minister Aweys said the annulment applies specifically to security- and defense-related cooperation frameworks between Mogadishu and Abu Dhabi. He stressed, however, that the move does not amount to a break in broader relations, noting that diplomatic ties remain in place and that embassy and consular services in both capitals continue operating normally.
The minister also offered a frank evaluation of Somalia–UAE engagement, acknowledging assistance previously provided by the Emirates while arguing that certain forms of involvement had harmed Somalia’s internal stability and the well-being of its people. He said the government acted after determining that the costs linked to the suspended arrangements had begun to outweigh their benefits, prompting a recalibration of the relationship around Somalia’s national interests.
The minister also reaffirmed Somalia’s foreign policy stance based on mutual respect and non-interference, and said the country remains open to partnerships with any actor that respects its sovereignty, unity, and independence. “Anyone interested in or respecting our unity and independence can have a relationship with Somalia,” he said.
