GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The Federal Government of Somalia has dismissed as fabricated a document circulating online that purported to show Mogadishu reaffirming support for the Islamic Republic of Iran, as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.

In a clarification issued Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the document titled “Somali Reaffirms Support For The Islamic Republic Of Iran” was fake and had not been issued by the ministry.

“The circulating document is fake and was not issued by the Ministry,” the statement said, urging the public and media to rely solely on communications published through its verified official platforms.

The denial comes amid heightened regional hostilities reported on 28 February 2026, which have triggered diplomatic responses across multiple capitals and prompted emergency discussions at the United Nations Security Council.

During a Security Council meeting a day earlier, Somalia’s representative speaking on behalf of the A3, the three African non-permanent members called for restraint and dialogue over confrontation.

“The A3 reiterates that all member states must respect their obligations under international law,” the Somali envoy said, delivering a message that emphasized diplomacy and adherence to international legal frameworks.

The Council session focused on the rapidly deteriorating situation in the Middle East, with several members warning that further escalation could undermine regional and global stability.

Against that backdrop, Somalia’s foreign ministry moved swiftly to distance the government from the purported statement backing Iran, signaling the sensitivity of diplomatic positioning at a time of intensifying geopolitical tension.
