GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia and Djibouti have signed an agreement to deepen cooperation in higher education and research, expanding academic exchanges and joint programmes between institutions in the two neighbouring countries.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed in Mogadishu, the two governments agreed to promote student and faculty exchanges, joint research projects, short-term training programmes and academic conferences.

The deal also provides for the development of joint degree programmes at bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels, alongside streamlined arrangements for scholarships and the mutual recognition of academic qualifications.

Both sides committed to protecting intellectual property generated through joint research in line with national laws and international agreements.

Somalia’s Minister of Education, Culture and Higher Education, Farah Sheikh Abdulqadir, said the agreement builds on longstanding ties between the two countries and is expected to strengthen the quality of higher education and research capacity in Somalia.

Djibouti’s Minister of Higher Education and Research, Nabil Mohamed Ahmed, said the partnership would create wider opportunities for students and academics and contribute to regional knowledge-sharing and development.

Officials said the agreement forms part of broader efforts by both governments to expand strategic cooperation and invest in human capital across the Horn of Africa.
