Somalia, Egypt Coordinate Response to Somaliland Recognition Claims
GOOBJOOG NEWS | JEDDAH: Somalia and Egypt have agreed to strengthen diplomatic coordination to counter any actions they say threaten Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity, following talks between their foreign ministers on the sidelines of an OIC meeting in Jeddah.
Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, rejected Israel’s alleged recognition of the self-declared Somaliland region, describing it as a challenge to Somalia’s internationally recognised borders.
The outcome of the meeting included a shared commitment to uphold international law and to support diplomatic and multilateral efforts aimed at safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty. The ministers said their alignment would reinforce Somalia’s position within regional and international forums.
The talks were expected to bolster Somalia’s diplomatic backing among Islamic countries and add pressure against any unilateral steps affecting the country’s territorial integrity.
Somalia considers Somaliland an integral part of its territory, although the region declared independence in 1991 and remains unrecognised by the international community.
