BREAKING: Somalia Elected Member of AU Peace and Security Council
GOOBJOOG NEWS|ADDIS ABABA: Somalia has been elected to serve a two-year term on the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC), securing a seat in the continent’s top decision-making body on conflict prevention, management, and resolution.
The just-concluded election by the AU Executive Council saw Somalia garner 46 out of a possible 49 votes. The Council, which comprises foreign ministers from member states, cast its vote through a secret ballot.
Only 49 eligible member states participated, as suspended countries are barred from voting. To win a seat, candidates were required to secure a two-thirds majority of the valid votes cast.
The election win comes at a time Somalia is also chairing the UN Security Council. This positions the Horn of Africa nation as a key mover and decision maker not only in the continent but also globally.
Somalia’s mandate will officially begin on 1 April 2026 and run until 31 March 2028. The election outcome is expected to be formally endorsed during the 39th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly scheduled for 14–15 February 2026.
Seats And Regional Allocation
Somalia won one of the 10 two-year PSC seats up for election this year. These seats are allocated on a regional basis: 3 for West Africa, 2 for Central Africa, 2 for East Africa, 2 for Southern Africa, and 1 for North Africa. Somalia’s election reflects its inclusion among the East African representatives. The results are scheduled to be formally endorsed at the 39th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly on 14–15 February 2026. The new PSC term begins on 1 April 2026.
Somalia’s election reflects its position within the East African bloc, which had two seats available in this round.
