Somalia Enforces National ID Requirement for Domestic Flights
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The federal government of Somalia has begun enforcing a requirement for citizens to present a national identification card for all domestic flights, as part of efforts to tighten security and streamline travel procedures.
The Immigration and Citizenship Agency of Somalia confirmed that the rule took effect on March 1 after a two-month postponement intended to give travelers more time to obtain the National ID card, known locally as “Niira.”
Director Mustaf Sheikh Ahmed Dhuxulow oversaw the rollout of the new system, which officials say is aimed at strengthening passenger verification and improving coordination between aviation and security authorities.
The requirement had initially been scheduled to begin on Jan. 1, 2026, but was delayed to allow citizens without identification to complete registration.
The move forms part of broader government efforts to modernize identity management and enhance oversight of domestic travel as Somalia advances institutional reforms.
