GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Somali government has successfully evacuated 14 of its citizens from Sudan, where they had been trapped in deteriorating conditions amid ongoing unrest.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the evacuation, described as a “critical humanitarian operation,” was coordinated by Somalia’s consular services in collaboration with international partners and local authorities.

It marks the latest in a series of government-led efforts to protect Somali nationals caught in conflict zones.

Seven of the evacuees were flown to Mogadishu, while the other seven were safely relocated to Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. The Ministry confirmed that all individuals are in stable condition and are receiving support as they reintegrate.

“These citizens had been enduring extremely challenging circumstances in Sudan,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on social media platform X. “Their safe return reflects the government’s strong commitment to the welfare of Somalis abroad.”

Officials also thanked diplomatic teams and foreign missions who facilitated the rescue.

The operation highlights Somalia’s evolving foreign policy focus, which places a high priority on citizen protection and crisis responsiveness. The Ministry urged all Somali nationals living in high-risk areas to stay in contact with embassies and consulates for assistance.

Sudan has remained unstable since conflict erupted between rival military factions in April 2023, displacing thousands and triggering a humanitarian crisis across the region.
