Somalia, Germany Expand Migration Partnership to Modernize Border Systems, Boost Passport Recognition

GOOBJOOG NEWS | BERLIN: Somalia and Germany are advancing cooperation on migration and border security as part of a broader push to modernize Somalia’s immigration services and enhance the global recognition of Somali travel documents.
A delegation from Somalia’s Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA), led by Director General Mustafa Sheikh Cali Dhuxulow, held high-level talks in Berlin with German federal police and migration authorities.
The discussions focused on digitalizing Somalia’s visa and passport systems, improving airport infrastructure, and curbing human trafficking.
The visit comes as Somalia seeks to rebuild key state institutions and restore international confidence in its identity systems. Officials say German support will help improve border security through advanced technology and training, while also making legal mobility easier for Somali citizens.
“Germany’s experience offers a practical model as we work to professionalize our services, protect our borders, and raise the global profile of the Somali passport,” said Dhuxulow.
The delegation toured Berlin International Airport to study Germany’s use of biometric tools and integrated border systems, with Somalia aiming to adopt similar innovations to meet international standards.
The talks are part of Somalia’s broader efforts to engage international partners in strengthening governance and boosting mobility and security across the Horn of Africa.
