Somalia Government, UN Assess Drought Impact in Kismayo

Storyline:National News

GOOBJOOG NEWS | KISMAYO: A delegation from Somalia’s government disaster management agencies has arrived in Kismayo to assess the impact of the ongoing drought that has displaced thousands of families and deepened humanitarian needs across the country.

The delegation includes representatives from humanitarian organisations as well as the United Nations Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, George Conway.

Officials said the team will visit several internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in areas surrounding Kismayo to evaluate living conditions, access to basic services and the humanitarian challenges facing displaced families.

Somalia continues to grapple with the effects of prolonged drought, which has severely affected livelihoods, particularly in rural areas, and forced many families to flee their homes in search of food, water and assistance.

Aid agencies warn that persistent dry conditions are increasing pressure on limited humanitarian resources.

Authorities said the assessment will help inform emergency response efforts and strengthen coordination between government institutions and international partners as the drought crisis continues.
