GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The federal government of Somalia has launched a four-day technical workshop aimed at strengthening the country’s ability to access international climate financing, as it seeks resources to address the growing impact of climate change.

The session, held in Mogadishu, focuses on the programming framework of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the validation of key national strategies required to qualify for global climate funding.

Opening the workshop, the Executive Director of the National Climate Fund, Liban Absiye, said improving financial readiness was critical for Somalia as it confronts recurrent droughts, floods and environmental degradation.

Participants are reviewing and validating two strategic documents: the Readiness Needs Assessment and the Private Sector Engagement Strategy. Officials say the frameworks are intended to align Somalia’s development priorities with international climate finance requirements and attract long-term investment.

The workshop is organised by Somalia’s National Designated Authority under the African Union–Africa Investment Platform multicountry readiness programme, in partnership with the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa.

Government officials, financial institutions, private sector representatives and civil society groups are attending alongside national and international experts. Organisers say the broad participation is designed to strengthen coordination, encourage private sector involvement and speed up the development of bankable climate-resilient projects.
