Storyline:National News
Humanitarian response continued across the country and as of 31 August, partners have treated about 149,100 children under five for acute malnutrition. Food Security partners have reached 320,100 people with food assistance, 104,100 people with activities aimed at building livelihoods and 442,700 people received livelihood seasonal inputs such as seeds, tools, fishing equipment, irrigation vouchers and livestock distribution and vaccination. Education partners reached 44,000 children with teaching activities and school feeding programmes while 655,000 people have been
provided with temporary and sustainable access to safe water. Over one million Somalis have received basic health services throughout the country and the Protection Cluster has reached 284,600 people with protection activities.
In addition, contingency planning is underway for the potential impact of the El Niño.
El Niño is likely to lead to flooding along the Juba and Shabelle rivers, flash floods in the central regions, and an exacerbation of drought conditions in the northern parts of Somalia. Partners are therefore stepping up preparedness and preventive efforts including climate monitoring, preposition of stocks, media messages to communities that could be affected and reinforcing river embankments.
