NISA Says Four Al Shabaab Fighters Surrender In Baidoa

GOOBJOOG NEWS | BAIDOA: Somalia’s intelligence agency has said that four Al-Shabaab fighters had surrendered in Baidoa, a move officials described as a sign of growing pressure on the militant group.

The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said the men, once part of Al-Shabaab’s frontline units, gave themselves up after months of clashes with government forces and sustained airstrikes.

Officials said the defections highlight the impact of the government’s military and outreach campaigns aimed at weakening al Shabaab across Southwest state.

The men will be sent to rehabilitation centres for reintegration and education before rejoining their communities, according to federal authorities.

The Somali government has intensified its offensive against Al-Shabaab in recent months, combining ground operations with U.S. air support and local militia mobilisation.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has vowed to eradicate the group, which has fought for more than 15 years to topple the state.
