Somalia, Italy discuss Red Sea security and defence cooperation

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia and Italy are looking to deepen security cooperation as growing instability around the Red Sea raises wider concerns for Somalia and international trade routes.

The issue was central to talks in Mogadishu between Somali National Army Commander Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud and Italy’s Joint Operations Commander, Gen. Giovanni Maria Iannucci, who was accompanied by Italy’s ambassador to Somalia, Pier Mario Daccò Coppi.

The two sides discussed developments in the security environment, with particular attention to the Red Sea and the potential implications for Somalia and the wider region.

The Red Sea is a major corridor for international trade, linking the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean through the Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb strait. Disruptions in the waterway have broader implications for shipping and regional security.

Against this backdrop, the Somali and Italian military leadership also discussed ways of strengthening cooperation against shared security threats and maintaining Italy’s strategic support for the Somali National Army.

The talks form part of Somalia’s wider effort to build the capacity of its national security institutions while maintaining partnerships with international allies.

Italy’s engagement with Somalia also sits within its broader security interests in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, a region central to maritime trade and European security concerns.

The discussions suggest that defence cooperation between Mogadishu and Rome is increasingly being shaped not only by Somalia’s domestic security needs but also by the wider strategic environment around the Horn of Africa and Red Sea.
