Somalia, Italy Partner to Build National Ocean Data Center
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia and Italy have launched a joint initiative to establish the Somali Oceano-Hydrographic Office (SOHO), a national ocean data center designed to strengthen maritime security, navigation safety, and the sustainable use of marine resources.
The plan was unveiled in Mogadishu by the Commander of the Somali Navy and Coastal Defense, Commodore Admiral Abdiwahab Abdullahi, alongside experts from Italy’s Hydrographic Institute (IIM).
Officials said the new office will serve as Somalia’s central authority for hydrographic and oceanographic data, producing navigational charts, updating maritime maps, and providing vital information for vessels operating in Somali waters.
“This partnership marks a new era in our maritime development,” Admiral Abdullahi said. “The SOHO will give Somalia the capacity to monitor, manage, and protect its vast coastline with greater precision and independence.”
Under the collaboration, Somali personnel will receive advanced training from Italian specialists, supported by new technology for mapping, data collection, and marine analysis.
Experts said the initiative will boost Somalia’s ability to safeguard shipping routes, improve disaster preparedness, and ensure the sustainable management of its blue economy.
The creation of the SOHO is part of a broader strategy to modernize Somalia’s naval operations and assert control over one of Africa’s longest and most resource-rich coastlines.
