Somalia Joins Push to Criminalise Colonial-Era Abuses at Algiers Conference
GOOBJOOG NEWS | ALGIERS: State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, joined African leaders in Algiers on Sunday for a regional conference seeking to advance efforts to criminalise colonial-era abuses and push for reparations.
The two-day meeting, running from Nov. 30 to Dec. 1, brought together countries that endured colonial rule to build international recognition of historical violations and develop mechanisms to address their enduring impact.
Delegates are expected to endorse a draft “Algiers Declaration,” which outlines key recommendations on documenting colonial crimes and strengthening calls for redress.
The final document will be presented to African Union heads of state at their February 2026 summit, where it may be adopted as a continental reference.
On the sidelines of the conference, Omar met Algeria’s Secretary of State for African Affairs, Salma Mansouri, for talks on bilateral cooperation and issues of mutual interest.
