Somalia Joins Regional Push for Climate-Resilient Land and Food Systems
GOOBJOOG NEWS | ADDIS ABABA: Somalia has joined a new five-year regional initiative led by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to improve land governance and strengthen climate resilience across East Africa.
Somalia was represented at the launch meeting in Addis Ababa by the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Eng. Mohamed Hassan Abdulle. The programme aims to help member states manage land more sustainably, boost food production, and support pastoralist and farming communities affected by climate shocks and resource-based tensions.
The initiative is expected to promote joint approaches to land-use policy, reduce conflict over access to water and grazing areas, and bolster long-term food security across the IGAD region.
Eng. Mohamed Hassan said Somalia is committed to fully participating in the project’s implementation, describing it as critical for improving land management, rebuilding agricultural capacity and reinforcing regional cooperation.
“This initiative supports our national priorities on land governance and food security while strengthening collaboration with our neighbours,” he said.
The Horn of Africa continues to face recurring droughts and floods, making coordinated regional resilience efforts increasingly urgent.
