Somalia, Kenya Step Up Infrastructure Cooperation in Nairobi Talks
GOOBJOOG NEWS | NAIROBI: Somalia and Kenya have agreed to deepen cooperation in infrastructure, housing and urban development following high-level talks in Nairobi between Somalia’s Minister of Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing, Dr. Elmi Mohamud Nur, and Kenya’s Minister of Public Works, Lands and Urban Planning, Alice Wahome.
The meeting, also attended by Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jibriil Ibrahim Abdulle, focused on strengthening technical collaboration as both countries pursue regional integration and scale up development initiatives.
Talks centred on three areas. The ministers committed to enhancing capacity building through joint training and professional development programs that support urbanization, housing policy, and infrastructure management. They also agreed to accelerate cross-border development projects designed to improve trade, mobility and economic stability along the Somalia–Kenya corridor.
A third focus area was affordable and sustainable housing, with both sides discussing long-term strategies to expand access to safe, low-cost homes, a challenge facing rapidly growing cities in both nations.
The meeting closed on a positive note, with the two ministers reaffirming their commitment to broaden cooperation and advance shared development priorities. The renewed partnership is set to reinforce existing bilateral agreements while supporting infrastructure growth across the region.
