Somalia Launches Digital ID Platforms to Strengthen National Identification System

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has unveiled three new digital platforms aimed at strengthening the country’s national ID infrastructure, in a move officials say will enhance identity verification, service delivery, and digital inclusion.
The platforms, HUBIYE Verification System, the e-Aqoonsi mobile application, and the Certificate Delivery System (CDS), were launched during a high-level ceremony in Mogadishu attended by Second Deputy Prime Minister Jibril Abdirashid Haji and Interior Minister Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh.
The HUBIYE platform is designed to support real-time identity verification across public and private sectors, while the e-Aqoonsi app allows citizens to access their national IDs via mobile devices.
The CDS will streamline the issuance and delivery of official identity documents, reducing delays and improving transparency.
Officials said the new systems mark a significant step toward Somalia’s digital transformation and efforts to establish a secure, inclusive identification framework.
The country has faced longstanding challenges in developing a unified national ID system, with large segments of the population lacking formal identification. The launch is part of broader reforms under Somalia’s digital governance agenda.
