GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia has launched its first training programme focused on diplomatic privileges and immunities for officials from the country’s security and transport institutions, aiming to strengthen understanding of international diplomatic protections and obligations.

The three-day programme, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Diplomatic Institute, brings together officials from the Criminal Investigation Department, Traffic Police, Somali National Army, National Intelligence and Security Agency, Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, as well as security officials from across the country.

Permanent Secretary Hamza Adan Haadow opened the training alongside senior departmental directors from the ministry.

The programme covers protections provided under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to foreign diplomats serving in Somalia, as well as the protections and obligations applying to Somali diplomats working abroad.

Haadow said respect for diplomatic privileges and immunities was an important reflection of Somalia’s responsibilities as a member of the international community.

The training provides security and government officials with practical knowledge of diplomatic protocols, particularly in situations involving foreign missions and accredited diplomats, while reinforcing Somalia’s obligations under international diplomatic law.
