Somalia Launches First Innovative Community-Based Health Insurance Targeting Mass Market

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia has recently introduced its first innovative health insurance scheme, Baraka Kaaliye Care, in Mogadishu. The scheme aims to provide affordable medical coverage to various social groups, ensuring access to essential healthcare services.

The health insurance service is operated by a private company called Baraka Insurance. The company has partnered with several hospitals in Mogadishu and offers different packages ranging from basic to comprehensive, catering to the needs and budget of the customers.

Baraka Insurance’s operational manager, Zakaria Ibrahim, stated during the launch in Mogadishu that the service is affordable and easily accessible for any Somali citizen to join.

The keynote speaker at the launching event was Dr. Ali Haji Adam, the Federal Minister of Health. He emphasized that the health insurance service provides Somali citizens with an opportunity to access quality healthcare. He further mentioned that the government will provide support and regulation to ensure the service’s sustainability and transparency.

Mohamed Abdi Barre, the Minister of Youth and Sports, highlighted the benefits of the health insurance service for the younger generation and encouraged them to enroll and prioritize their health.

Senator Prof. Dr. Osman Haji Mohamud Dufle, who was present at the function, stated that the health insurance service is a testament to the progress and stability Somalia has achieved in recent years. He also emphasized that the service will contribute to the country’s economic growth and social cohesion.

The launch of the health insurance service in Mogadishu is part of Baraka Insurance Company’s collaboration with the Private Sector Partnership in Health (PSPH) to enhance the health sector and improve the living standards of the Somali people.

The company has plans to expand the service to other regions and cities in the near future.
