Somalia Launches Vision 2060 Roadmap to Guide Long-Term Development

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal government of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Monday officially launched Centennial Vision 2060 (CV2060), an ambitious, long-term development strategy that aims to transform the country into a peaceful, resilient, and upper-middle-income country by the year 2060.
The launch event, held in Mogadishu, brought together senior government officials, leaders of federal member states, diplomats, international development partners, and policy experts.
The Vision outlines seven National Transformation Phases (NTPs), with the first five-year plan (2025–2029) already initiated earlier this year. It is aligned with broader continental objectives such as the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
“We are grateful to the world for their continued support to Somalia, and we must now realize the aspirations of Somalis who want to compete globally,” President Mohamud said.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on his part emphasized the importance of nationwide participation: “Every Somali must take part in achieving the goals of Centennial Vision 2060.”
The Vision framework was developed by Somali experts with support from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UN-ECA). UN-ECA Executive Secretary Claver Gatete, present at the ceremony, called the strategy “a bold and transformational roadmap” and highlighted Somalia’s leadership in setting long-term national goals.
Director General of Kenya’s Vision 2030 Secretariat Kenneth Mwige, said Somalia’s plan represented a shared African ambition for growth and resilience.
Representatives from the World Bank, United Nations, and the European Union pledged continued support for Somalia’s development goals. Qimiao Fan, World Bank Country Director for Somalia, reaffirmed the Bank’s partnership, while EU Ambassador Karin Johansson described the launch as a “historic moment” and a “shared journey toward peace and prosperity.”
Centennial Vision 2060 focuses on priority areas including infrastructure, education, governance, economic diversification, and climate resilience.
“This is not just a policy document, it is a commitment to a future defined by Somali ambition and unity,” said Hassan Adam Hosow, Chief Economic Advisor to the President.
