GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal Republic of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud paid tribute to the country’s independence struggle on Thursday, laying a wreath at Mogadishu’s Dhagahtuur Monument as part of national celebrations marking 65 years since the end of colonial rule.

The solemn ceremony, held in the heart of the capital, honored the memory of Somalis killed during a 1940s protest against foreign occupation, an event widely seen as a turning point in the push for independence.

“The legacy of those who fought for our freedom lives on,” said President Mohamud, calling for unity as Somalia continues its efforts to rebuild after years of conflict.

The Dhagahtuur Monument, recently renovated, is a key symbol of Somali resistance and resilience.

It stands at the site of one of the bloodiest crackdowns on demonstrators by colonial forces, and has come to represent the country’s long road to sovereignty.

The event kicks off a week of nationwide celebrations, including parades, public addresses, and cultural displays.
