GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Information, Culture and Tourism minister Daud Aweis Jama has congratulated journalists and media professionals as the country marks Somali Media Day, reaffirming the government’s commitment to press freedom and the protection of media workers.

The minister said the day commemorates the launch of the first Somali newspaper and the introduction of written Somali, milestones that helped spread knowledge, shape public debate and lay the foundation for modern media and education in the country.

He said Somali media has played a vital role in promoting national unity, defending sovereignty and informing the public, while also countering misinformation during periods of political and security transition.

A responsible and professional press is essential for democracy, accountability and state-building, the minister said, urging journalists to strengthen ethical standards, improve fact-checking and prioritise the public interest.

The government remains committed to safeguarding freedom of expression, raising professional standards and improving the safety of journalists, he added.

Somali Media Day, the minister said, offers an opportunity to reflect on the country’s media history and to work towards a transparent, inclusive and people-centred media sector that serves the wider public.
