GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The federal government of Somalia’s Internal Security has ordered all government institutions to ensure official vehicles carry proper registration plates, in a move aimed at tightening security and preventing car-borne attacks.

In a directive issued Wednesday, the ministry said that from March 5, 2026, government officials, including cabinet ministers and members of parliament, will not be allowed to use vehicles without official registration.

The measure forms part of broader efforts to counter vehicle-borne explosive threats blamed on the militant group the government refers to as “Khawarij,” which has carried out bombings in the capital and other المناطق in recent years.

Authorities said stricter oversight of official vehicles will support security agencies in monitoring movement, improving identification processes and reducing vulnerabilities exploited in past attacks.

The ministry urged public institutions to comply fully with inspection and verification procedures, stressing that vehicle registration is a legal requirement and a key component of national security management.

It also called for continued cooperation between citizens and security forces to enhance public safety and protect national stability.
