GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Federal Government of Somalia is pushing to accelerate legislation governing internal affairs, security and immigration while tightening parliamentary oversight of public institutions, as the country seeks to strengthen accountability and improve the functioning of its federal government.

The renewed legislative push is expected to place greater responsibility on parliamentary committees to scrutinise government operations, review pending bills and ensure institutions responsible for domestic administration and security remain accountable to lawmakers.

Speaker of the House of the People Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur has called for faster processing of legislation currently before the parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs, Regional Administrations and Security, urging members to move pending bills towards debate and consideration by the full House.

The directive followed discussions in Mogadishu on Thursday aimed at improving the committee’s legislative performance and strengthening its oversight of government agencies responsible for internal affairs, security and immigration.

The push comes as Somalia continues to navigate challenges surrounding federal governance, institutional coordination and security, with parliament playing a central role in developing laws and monitoring government performance.

Effective oversight of security and internal administration is particularly important as the country works to strengthen its institutions and improve coordination between federal and regional authorities.

Nur also urged lawmakers to adopt recently introduced parliamentary modernisation measures designed to streamline legislative procedures and improve the efficiency of committee operations.

The initiative reflects a broader effort to strengthen parliament’s role beyond passing legislation by ensuring government institutions operate within established legal frameworks and remain subject to scrutiny.

However, parliament has not identified the specific bills targeted for accelerated consideration or announced deadlines for their completion.

The effectiveness of the latest push will depend on how quickly parliamentary committees translate their legislative priorities into bills ready for debate and how consistently they exercise their oversight responsibilities.
