GOOBJOOG NEWS | KIGALI: Somalia and Nigeria have agreed to strengthen military collaboration in counter-terrorism and troop training, following high-level talks between Brigadier General Sahal Abdullahi Omar (General Khalid), Commander of Somalia’s Ground Forces, and Major General Usman Abdulmumin Yusuf, Chief of the Nigerian Army.

The meeting, held in Kigali, Rwanda, focused on expanding security cooperation between the two nations, both of which face persistent threats from extremist groups.

The discussions covered joint training programs, intelligence sharing, and the exchange of battlefield experience in counter-insurgency operations. Both commanders emphasized the shared challenges posed by militant organizations operating across the continent and the need for a coordinated regional response.

General Khalid said Somalia sees Nigeria as a critical partner in its ongoing campaign against al-Shabaab and in building a more professional, self-sufficient national army. “Our cooperation with friendly African nations like Nigeria is vital to achieving stability and regional security,” he said.

The talks are part of Somalia’s broader strategy to deepen continental defense partnerships and improve operational capacity as the country gradually assumes full security responsibility from the African Union peacekeeping mission.
