GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s constitutional oversight body has directed all state institutions to adopt the officially approved national emblem and flag colours, in a move aimed at standardising the country’s national symbols across government offices and public institutions.

In a statement, the Independent Constitutional Review and Implementation Commission (ICRIC) said the directive was issued under provisions of Somalia’s Provisional Constitution and follows concerns over the inconsistent use of national symbols by some institutions.

The commission instructed federal and state government institutions, public agencies and citizens to use the official colours and specifications outlined in the constitution when displaying the national flag and emblem.

According to the statement, the official blue colour of the Somali flag must conform to constitutional standards, while the national emblem should be displayed using the approved colour scheme and design specifications.

The commission also called on institutions currently using unofficial versions of the national symbols to make the necessary corrections and ensure compliance with constitutional requirements.

The directive applies to federal government offices, federal member state institutions and other public entities, which have been urged to update official documents, signage and branding where necessary.

National symbols remain an important part of Somalia’s state-building process as the country continues efforts to strengthen institutions and reinforce a shared national identity following decades of conflict and political fragmentation.

The Somali flag, first adopted in 1954 before independence, has long served as a symbol of Somali unity, while the national emblem is a key feature of official government documents and state institutions.
