Somalia Participates in Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit in Nairobi

GOOBJOOG NEWS | NAIROBI: Federal Government of Somalia’s Foreign Affairs minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi led the Somali delegation to attend the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

The aim of the summit is to recalibrate strategies to boost soil productivity and agriculture and its development in the continent.

The Summit, which is an initiative of the African Union is being held under the theme “Listen to the Land”., and seeks to review the progress made since previous commitments by African leaders to boost fertilizer use for agricultural growth in Africa.

According to an African Union press release, discussions among various stakeholders, including policymakers, scientists, farmers and private-sector representatives sought to explore long-term solutions to food and nutrition deficiencies in Africa

Key topics included soil nutrient management, climate change impact, regenerative practices, and the implementation of previous commitments made by African leaders to boost agricultural productivity. 

Nairobi Declaration

The conference also reviewed and discuss the Nairobi Declaration, which is expected to be adopted by Heads of State and Government on May 9. 

The declaration aims to outline commitments and strategies to address soil health, fertilizer use, and sustainable agricultural practices in Africa. 

This includes a 10-year Fertilizer Action Plan that is set to be formulated as part of the outcomes of the AFSH summit. According to the press release, this plan “will mark a pivotal stride towards a green revolution across Africa, laying the groundwork for an agricultural renaissance.” 

During the conference, the importance of the African farmers to have access to experts at low cost and quality, and expert in protecting the health of the soil was discussed in depth.

The Somali delegation presented its achievements in the development of production and agricultural crops in Somalia.
