Somalia Highlights Strategic Projects at Beijing Investment Forum
GOOBJOOG NEWS | BEIJING: Somalia has unveiled a slate of major infrastructure and industrial investment opportunities to Chinese investors, as the country seeks to accelerate economic growth and position itself as a regional trade and logistics hub.
Speaking at the Somalia Industrialisation and Special Economic Zones High-Level Forum in Beijing, SOMINVEST Director Mohamed Dubo outlined the country’s industrialisation strategy, calling for stronger partnerships with Chinese businesses to expand manufacturing, develop infrastructure and boost export-led growth.
The investment forum brought together government officials, investors and financial institutions to explore opportunities across key sectors, including transport, logistics, energy and industrial development, as Somalia steps up efforts to attract foreign direct investment.
Among the flagship projects presented were the proposed New Mogadishu Development Project and the Hobyo Port Development Project, which Somali officials said could transform the country’s logistics network, expand industrial production and strengthen its role in regional and international trade.
Dubo said Somalia was creating a more competitive investment environment by promoting bankable projects and strengthening partnerships aimed at mobilising long-term capital for sustainable economic development.
The investment drive comes as Somalia seeks to diversify its economy beyond traditional sectors and attract private investment to support reconstruction after decades of conflict. The government has increasingly promoted infrastructure development, special economic zones and strategic ports as pillars of its long-term economic agenda, while positioning the country’s extensive coastline and location along one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors as key advantages for international investors.
China has emerged as one of Somalia’s leading development and trade partners, with growing cooperation spanning infrastructure, fisheries, energy and investment.
Deeper engagement with Chinese investors is expected to play a significant role in unlocking Somalia’s industrial potential and creating jobs for its rapidly growing population.
