Somalia PM Meets Youth Leaders to Boost Role in Security, Elections

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal Government of Somalia Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met with prominent youth leaders in Mogadishu, aiming to strengthen their involvement in national defense and upcoming electoral processes.
The high-level meeting sought to mobilize Somalia’s young population, estimated to be over 70% of the country’s demographic, to take an active role in securing the nation and contributing to preparations for inclusive, citizen-led elections.
“Youth are not just the future of Somalia; they are the present force behind its peace, security, and democratic progress,” Prime Minister Barre said during the discussions.
The Somali government has made youth engagement a cornerstone of its political and security agenda, amid ongoing efforts to rebuild state institutions and counter threats posed by Al-Shabaab insurgents.
Officials said the talks focused on empowering young Somalis to play a leadership role in shaping national policies, participating in democratic processes, and fostering social cohesion.
Barre reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding youth opportunities and integrating them into public service and national decision-making structures.
The move comes as Somalia prepares for a shift toward direct elections, part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening governance and political inclusion across the country.
