Somalia President opens Martini Hospital in Mogadishu

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud on Thursday officially inaugurated Martini Hospital, in central Mogadishu which has been modernised to international standards.

The Martini Hospital was once a renowned place to get adequate medical treatment in the centre of Mogadishu, until 1977 when the military regime transformed the hospital into a recreational for veterans from the Ogaden war and residents had to seek medical treatment from hospitals in the outskirts of town.

Delivering his speech at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mohamud stressed that this is one of the ‘’big achievements’’ reached by the Somali people.

The president commended IIDA (Women’s Development Organization) which was supported by Italian government to rebuilt the hospital and equipped it.

He was accompanied by some members of his family, Businessmen and delegates were welcomed at Mogadishu International Airport by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and several senior Somali government officials.

When the Barre regime collapsed in 1991, the hospital which was founded in 1910 homed 1977 war veterans with their families into the Martini Hospital.

The hospital will serve for Somali people and the National Army.
