GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The Somali government has expressed regret over the decision by United States authorities to deny entry to internationally acclaimed Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, despite diplomatic efforts aimed at facilitating his travel to the country for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said it had engaged relevant U.S. authorities in support of Artan’s travel but acknowledged that the efforts did not yield a positive outcome.

The ministry described Artan as Somalia’s most accomplished sporting figure and noted that his achievements have become a source of national pride.

“The Government of Somalia remains immensely proud of Mr. Artan’s achievements and contributions,” the statement said, adding that his success continues to inspire young Somalis and demonstrates how talent, dedication and perseverance can lead to international recognition.

The government confirmed that Artan has safely returned to Somalia and will continue carrying out his national and international duties.

The ministry also thanked countries, institutions, sports organizations and individuals who expressed solidarity with the referee following the incident.

Somalia further indicated that it would continue engaging relevant partners to seek clarification regarding the circumstances surrounding the decision and to safeguard the rights and dignity of its citizens abroad.

Background

Artan, who was named the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Referee of the Year in 2025, had been selected among the officials for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making him one of the most prominent figures in Somali sports history.

His inability to enter the United States triggered widespread reactions both within Somalia and internationally. The case attracted attention from government officials, sporting bodies, public figures and football supporters, many of whom voiced support for the referee.

Following his return, thousands of Somalis gathered at Mogadishu Stadium and other locations in the capital to welcome him home, praising his accomplishments and expressing solidarity after what many viewed as a setback for one of the country’s most successful sporting ambassadors.

While U.S. authorities have not publicly provided a detailed explanation for the decision, the issue has become a major topic of discussion in Somalia, prompting calls for greater clarity regarding the circumstances that prevented Artan from participating in the tournament despite his appointment among FIFA’s selected match officials.

The Somali government concluded its statement by welcoming Artan home and reaffirming its support for his career and achievements, saying the Somali people stand proudly behind him.
