Somalia Pushes Back as Crowds Reject Israel’s Somaliland Decision
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Tens of thousands of Somalis gathered at Mogadishu’s main stadium on Tuesday in one of the capital’s largest demonstrations in recent years, denouncing Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and voicing support for Somalia’s unity and sovereignty.
The rally, led by senior Islamic scholars and clerics, drew crowds from across the Banadir region. Speakers framed the issue as both a national and moral cause, urging Somalis to stand against what they described as foreign interference threatening the country’s territorial integrity.
Addressing the crowd, religious leaders condemned Israel’s decision as unlawful and destabilising, warning it could deepen regional tensions in the Horn of Africa. They called on Somalis, particularly young people, to remain united and vigilant in defence of the country’s borders.
The mobilisation underscored strong public backing for the federal government’s diplomatic campaign to block international recognition of Somaliland, which has operated autonomously since 1991 but lacks international recognition.
The scale of the protest signals broad domestic consensus on the issue, reinforcing Mogadishu’s position as it seeks support from allies and international institutions.
The demonstration ended peacefully, with organisers saying it was meant to send a clear message to the international community that Somalia’s sovereignty remains a red line for its people.
