Somalia Pushes for Climate Finance to Tackle Droughts and Floods

GOOBJOOG NEWS | KAMPALA: Somalia has pledged to step up efforts to secure climate finance as the country battles worsening droughts and floods, officials said on Friday at the close of a regional meeting in Uganda.
A Somali delegation led by Liban Obsiye, Executive Director of the National Climate Fund, attended the 6th Meeting of African Climate Finance Directors in Kampala. The gathering focused on how African states can better access and deploy funds to confront climate change.
Obsiye said Mogadishu’s priorities are prevention and adaptation measures, with support from international partners. “The exchange of knowledge and experience is crucial to strengthen the resilience of Somalia and Africa as a whole,” he told participants.
He credited President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for making climate finance a government priority and said Somalia is working to accelerate access to available funding streams.
Somalia is among the countries most exposed to the effects of climate change, with recurring floods and droughts devastating communities and threatening food security.
The delegation included officials from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the National Economic Commission.
