Somalia Pushes for Renewable Energy and Water Solutions in High-Level Climate Meeting

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU:  In a major push for climate resilience, Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) co-hosted a high-level meeting in Mogadishu, focusing on renewable energy, water management, and environmental sustainability.

Bringing together key government officials, civil society groups, academics, and private sector leaders, the meeting aimed to mobilize resources and strengthen cooperation to combat climate change in Somalia—a country facing recurring droughts, floods, and water scarcity.

Commissioner of the Disaster Management Agency, Mr. Mahmoud Moaallin Abdulle, stressed the urgency of integrating climate resilience into Somalia’s National Strategy.

He called for long-term solutions, emphasizing the need to expand access to renewable energy sources like solar and wind while improving water conservation efforts.

Government ministers, including Minister of Energy and Water Resources Abdullahi Bidhaan and Minister of Environment and Climate Change Lieutenant General Bashir Mohamed Jama, reaffirmed their commitment to tackling environmental challenges.

They highlighted Somalia’s need for strategic partnerships and international support to drive sustainable development.

Water scarcity remains a pressing issue, particularly in rural communities where access to clean water is limited. Participants at the meeting explored ways to enhance water management systems to support agriculture, livestock, and human consumption.

UNDP representatives pledged continued support for Somalia’s climate initiatives, stressing that international cooperation and funding are crucial for meaningful progress.

The gathering marks a significant step forward in Somalia’s environmental efforts, demonstrating a united front in the fight against climate change.

With growing optimism about renewable energy and improved water systems, stakeholders are hopeful these initiatives will drive sustainable development and resilience in the region.
