GOOBJOOG NEWS | ISTANBUL: Somalia is stepping up efforts to attract investment and improve global trade links as its Ports and Maritime Transport Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, takes part in a major international transport forum in Turkey.

The Global Transport Connectivity Forum was launched by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and brings together leaders, investors, and experts from across the world to discuss how countries can improve road, air and sea transport.

The minister’s attendance signals Somalia’s ambition to turn its long coastline and strategic location near the Red Sea and Indian Ocean into a gateway for trade in East Africa and beyond.

“Somalia is ready to become a key player in regional trade. Our location gives us a natural advantage, but we need strong partnerships to modernize our ports and transport systems,” Nur said during the forum.

Somalia is hoping to attract new investment to help rebuild its infrastructure, especially ports and shipping corridors. The government sees this as crucial for reviving the economy, boosting employment and integrating more deeply with regional and global markets.

The Istanbul forum is also a chance to highlight Somalia’s growing relationship with Türkiye. Over the past decade, Türkiye has become one of Somalia’s most committed partners, supporting development projects, port management, humanitarian aid, and training programs.

Turkish companies have helped upgrade Mogadishu Port and other key facilities, while Ankara continues to provide diplomatic and technical support to Somalia’s rebuilding process.

Officials say the forum offers a platform for Somalia to present its long-term vision, exchange ideas with global experts, and secure support for future infrastructure projects.

As Somalia continues its recovery, stronger international transport links are seen as vital to unlocking trade opportunities and connecting Somali businesses with new markets.

The Global Transport Connectivity Forum continues through Friday and is expected to generate new cooperation deals between countries and development partners aiming to improve transport networks and economic ties across regions.
