Somalia Pushes Labour Reform Agenda at Global Conference in Geneva

GOOBJOOG NEWS | GENEVA: Somalia is joining over 180 countries at the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva as it seeks to strengthen labour rights and improve conditions for workers at home.
Labour Minister Yusuf Mohamed Aden is leading Somalia’s delegation to the high-profile event, where government officials, employers, and workers’ representatives are tackling some of the most urgent challenges facing the world of work, from job security and workplace safety to fair wages and social protection.
Backed by union leaders and business representatives, Minister Aden is expected to use the platform to push Somalia’s case for deeper international cooperation and investment in the country’s labour sector.
“The Somali workforce is the backbone of our national recovery,” said a senior official traveling with the minister. “This is about ensuring they have the rights, protections, and opportunities they deserve.”
The ILC, which runs from June 2 to 14, is a key forum for shaping global labour standards. For Somalia, still rebuilding after decades of conflict, it offers both a seat at the table and a chance to show commitment to international norms.
The Minister is also holding sideline meetings with other labour ministers to forge partnerships and share strategies on labour policy and reform.
In his upcoming speech to the ILC plenary, he is expected to emphasize Somalia’s efforts to align its labour laws with ILO standards, while improving employment opportunities as part of the country’s broader development push.
