GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia and Qatar have explored new avenues for investment and economic cooperation following a series of meetings held by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre with Qatari government institutions and major companies during his official visit to Doha.

The talks focused on translating discussions between the two countries into potential investment opportunities in Somalia, particularly in fisheries, energy, tourism and transportation.

Qatari institutions and companies expressed interest in exploring Somalia’s growing market, while the discussions also covered possible cooperation in trade, transport, institutional development and leadership training.

The outcome of the meetings could pave the way for greater Qatari private-sector and institutional involvement in Somalia, although no specific investment agreements or project commitments were announced.

Barre met officials from Qatar Diar, the Qatar Investment Authority, Qatar Airways and the Qatar Leadership Centre, where the Somali delegation presented opportunities in sectors the government considers central to future economic growth and job creation.

The engagements form part of Somalia’s broader strategy to attract foreign investment and strengthen economic partnerships as the government seeks to translate improved political and institutional stability into new commercial opportunities.

The visit also builds on the longstanding relationship between Mogadishu and Doha, with both sides now seeking to expand cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic and development ties into investment, trade and business partnerships.
