Somalia, Qatar to deepen diplomatic ties

GOOBJOOG NEWS | DOHA: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has arrived in Doha, Qatar for a two day official visit as the two countries seek to deepen fraternal.

The president arrived in Doha following an invite by Qatar prince Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to discuss ways to support and develop relations between Somalia and Qatar as well as the latest developments in the regional and international arenas of common concern.

Among the areas the two nations are keen to partner in include; Security, investment, economy and education.

The Somali delegation accompanying the president will seek to explore other sectors which the two countries can cooperate for the mutual benefit of their citizens.

Somali-Qatari diplomatic relations have witnessed continuous development over the past months based on the desire by the two countries to support and enhance cooperation to serve their common interests, goals and aspirations.

In a recent interview with the Qatar News Agency (QNA), Somali State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Ali Mohamed Omar underscored the government’s appreciation for Qatar’s support for Somalia and its people, noting the long-term and deep-rooted relations between the two brotherly countries and its peoples.

Omar added that Somalia has a long-standing relationship with Qatar, and Qatar has continued to maintain a good relationship with Somalia, and this makes the relationship unique.

He said Somalia was keen to enhance bilateral co-operation, especially at this time when the country needs much support in its efforts towards development and restoration of peace stability.

“Somalia needs much help to overcome the enormous challenges the country is facing,” he said, adding that the country has recovered as a fragile nation, but still faces security risks posed by the Al-Shabaab militants.

The minister pointed out to several agreements signed between Somalia and Qatar, including consultation and co-operation at the international arena such as the UN, the Arab League and other multilateral organizations.
