Somalia Seals Turkey-Backed Fisheries Deal to Boost Jobs, Exports
GOOBJOOG NEWS | ANKARA: The Federal Government of Somalia has secured a major investment deal with Turkey aimed at expanding its fisheries sector, creating jobs, and strengthening control over its maritime resources.
The agreement, signed in Ankara between Somalia’s Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy and Turkish industrial group OYAK, will channel investment into fish production, processing, and skills development, helping integrate Somali seafood into international markets.
Fisheries Minister Ahmed Hassan Adan said the partnership would modernise the sector, support coastal livelihoods and generate thousands of jobs, particularly for young people. He said the deal also includes measures to combat illegal fishing, a longstanding challenge for Somalia’s economy and maritime security.
Under the agreement, new processing facilities will be established inside Somalia, reducing reliance on exports of raw fish and increasing value addition and foreign exchange earnings.
Turkish officials and OYAK executives said the project reflects growing confidence in Somalia’s improving security and investment climate, adding that the cooperation would deepen long-standing ties between the two countries.
Somalia has one of Africa’s longest coastlines, but its fisheries sector remains largely underdeveloped. The government sees the blue economy as a key pillar of economic diversification and recovery after decades of conflict.
