Somalia Seeks Deeper Ties with South Korea at Korea–Africa Ministerial Meeting
GOOBJOOG NEWS | SEOUL, South Korea:Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali, participated in the opening session of the Korea–Africa Ministerial Meeting in Seoul, joining counterparts from across the continent for talks aimed at strengthening economic cooperation and diplomatic engagement with South Korea.
The meeting brings together foreign ministers and senior officials from African countries and the Republic of Korea to explore opportunities for expanding trade, investment, technology transfer and development partnerships amid growing ties between Africa and Asia.
Somalia’s participation underscores the Federal Government’s efforts to broaden its international partnerships and attract investment to support the country’s economic recovery, infrastructure development and institutional modernization.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government remains committed to building productive relationships with friendly nations that can contribute to Somalia’s long-term development goals through investment, innovation and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
The meeting comes as Somalia intensifies diplomatic outreach beyond its traditional partners, seeking to leverage its strategic location along key global shipping routes and capitalize on recent gains in governance, debt relief and economic reforms.
South Korea has increasingly expanded its engagement across Africa in recent years, focusing on infrastructure, digital technology, renewable energy, education and industrial development. The Korea–Africa partnership gained momentum following the inaugural Korea–Africa Summit held in Seoul in 2024, where leaders pledged to deepen cooperation and boost two-way trade and investment.
For Somalia, closer engagement with South Korea presents opportunities to benefit from one of Asia’s leading economies, particularly in areas such as technology, digital transformation, skills development, fisheries, renewable energy and public sector capacity-building.
The Korea–Africa Ministerial Meeting is expected to produce recommendations aimed at strengthening cooperation between African countries and South Korea while addressing shared challenges related to economic development, climate resilience, innovation and global security.
Somalia’s growing participation in high-level international forums reflects the Federal Government’s broader strategy of enhancing the country’s global standing, attracting foreign investment and building partnerships that support sustainable development and long-term stability.
