Somalia Seeks Modern Justice Framework with New Criminal Code
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The federal government of Somalia has submitted a revised criminal code to parliament, marking a significant step towards overhauling laws that have been in place for over six decades.
Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Hassan Moallim presented the bill to the House of the People after it was approved by the Council of Ministers.
The proposed law is intended to replace the current criminal code, Law No. 5 of 1962, which the minister said no longer reflects Somalia’s present-day social and legal realities.
During the bill’s first reading, lawmakers raised questions on its general principles, which the minister addressed, urging parliament to conduct a thorough review to ensure the new framework delivers a fair, effective, and modern justice system.
The reform is part of broader efforts by the government to update national laws and strengthen the rule of law institutions to better serve the Somali public.
