Somalia Seeks New Partnerships as Donor Funding Declines
GOOBJOOG NEWS | DOHA: Federal Government of Somalia’s Health Minister Ali Haji Adam has warned that shrinking international donor support is straining the country’s fragile healthcare system, urging stronger domestic financing and deeper cooperation among Global South nations.
Speaking at a high-level panel during the Doha Forum 2025, the minister said tightening global aid budgets are already affecting the delivery of essential services in Somalia, where donor funding has long underpinned public health programmes.
Adam said Somalia is accelerating a shift toward self-reliance by boosting internal health financing and reducing long-term dependence on external aid. He called for expanded South-South partnerships to help countries facing similar economic pressures to share expertise, pool resources and build joint solutions.
The minister pointed to new opportunities for investment, technology transfer and capacity building, saying these will be critical to creating a resilient health system able to withstand financial shocks and meet the needs of Somali communities.
He attended the forum with a senior delegation led by the ministry’s Director General, Guled Abdijalil Sheikh Ali. The team is holding side meetings with international partners aimed at strengthening cooperation and advancing Somalia’s national health priorities.
