Somalia Sends First Scholarship Students to Algeria as Bilateral Ties Deepen
GOOBJOOG NEWS | ALGIERS: Somalia has sent its first group of students to Algeria under a growing education partnership between the two countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Mohamed Omar met 27 students, 25 men and two women, who recently arrived in Algeria to take up university placements. They are part of 45 Somali students currently enrolled in Algerian institutions, under a bilateral agreement that provides 120 scholarships in fields including cybersecurity.
The minister said the programme forms part of wider cooperation frameworks signed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, covering education, foreign affairs, livestock development and natural gas cooperation.
Algeria earlier announced an additional package of 500 scholarships for Somali students in priority sectors such as agriculture, energy and technical sciences, a move Somali officials say aligns with national development goals and workforce needs.
The initiative underscores deepening ties between Mogadishu and Algiers and comes as President Mohamud completes an official visit focused on strengthening cooperation in education, trade and security.
