Somalia Special Forces Complete Advanced Training in Egypt

GOOBJOOG NEWS | CAIRO: Somalia’s Special Forces have completed advanced military training in Egypt as the two countries deepen defence cooperation and Mogadishu works to strengthen the capabilities of its national army.

The training covered commando operations, counterterrorism, urban warfare and parachute operations. The programme is part of broader military cooperation between Mogadishu and Cairo, with the latest training focused on specialised skills for Somali forces.

Brig. Gen. Adan Mohamed Omar, commander of the Somali National Army Special Forces Command, attended the closing ceremony and urged the troops to apply the skills gained during the programme in their national duties.

Somalia’s acting ambassador to Egypt Abdihakim Ahmed Mohamed, military attaché Brig. Gen. Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed and the commander of Egypt’s Airborne Forces were also present.

The training comes as Somalia seeks to build more capable and self-reliant security forces while taking greater responsibility for operations against Al-Shabaab.

Specialised units are expected to remain an important part of that effort, particularly in counterterrorism operations and missions requiring advanced combat and mobility skills.

Egypt has emerged as an important defence partner for Somalia as Mogadishu expands military cooperation with regional and international allies.

The latest programme adds to a series of defence initiatives aimed at improving the training, readiness and operational capabilities of the Somali National Army.
