Somalia Steps Up Crackdown on Human Trafficking Networks, CID Chief Says
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) says it is intensifying efforts to dismantle human trafficking networks that target vulnerable young people seeking travel or work abroad.
CID chief Brig. Gen. Muhudin Ahmed Osman said the agency has identified tracking mechanisms and intelligence networks to pursue individuals and groups involved in facilitating illegal journeys through travel agencies and online recruitment channels.
Speaking to police officials in Mogadishu, Gen. Muhudin urged security units to pay closer attention to social media, which he described as a primary tool used to lure victims with false promises of employment and safe travel.
“There are serious cases linked to trafficking,” he said. “I have assigned officers to investigate and arrest those involved. Social media is where many are recruited, and agencies that sell tickets or process passports must also be monitored.”
Officials say the CID has mapped specific hotspots where trafficking operations are coordinated, often involving illegal brokers and unregistered travel facilitators.
Authorities are urging families and community members to report suspected trafficking activities and support ongoing public awareness campaigns aimed at warning youth of the risks associated with illegal travel.
