GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia and Turkey are seeking to deepen their strategic partnership across political, economic and development sectors, building on years of cooperation that has made Ankara one of Mogadishu’s most important international partners.

The renewed commitment emerged on Monday during talks between Somalia’s Upper House Speaker Abdi Hashi Abdullahi and Türkiye’s newly appointed ambassador to Somalia, Ferhat Alkan, in Mogadishu.

The discussions focused on expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in economic development, infrastructure, social services and political engagement, as both countries look to strengthen a relationship that has grown significantly over the past decade.

Turkey has played a prominent role in Somalia’s reconstruction since 2011, when it expanded its humanitarian and development assistance during a devastating famine.

Since then, Ankara has supported infrastructure development, healthcare, education and security capacity-building, while Turkish companies have become involved in the management of key facilities, including Mogadishu’s airport and seaport.

The partnership has also expanded into defence and maritime cooperation, reflecting Somalia’s efforts to strengthen its security institutions and develop its economic potential.

In recent years, the two countries have signed agreements covering defence cooperation and offshore energy exploration, further broadening their relationship beyond traditional diplomatic and development assistance.

During Monday’s meeting, Abdi Hashi welcomed Ambassador Alkan and expressed appreciation for Turkey’s continued support for Somalia’s recovery and reconstruction.

He called for greater cooperation based on shared interests, particularly in sectors capable of supporting economic growth and improving public services.

The two officials also discussed opportunities for exchanging expertise and strengthening institutional cooperation between the countries.

The engagement comes as Somalia seeks to attract international investment, rebuild critical infrastructure and strengthen partnerships that can contribute to long-term economic development.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close diplomatic relations and advancing cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
